5G-INDUCE

About this project:


5G-INDUCE targets the development of an open, ETSI NFV compatible, 5G orchestration platform for the deployment of advanced 5G NetApps. The platform’s unique features provide the capability to the NetApp developers to define and modify the application requirements, while the underlay intelligent OSS can expose the network capabilities to the end users on the application level without revealing any infrastructure related information. This process enables an application-oriented network management and optimization approach that is in line with the operator’s role as manager of its own facilities, while it offers the development framework environment to any developer and service provider through which tailor-made applications can be designed and deployed, for the benefit of vertical industries and without any indirect dependency through a cloud provider.

The project focuses on the Industry 4.0 vertical sector, as one of the fastest growing and most impactful sectors in European economy with high potentials for application software development SMEs and with the capability to tackle all diverse cases of service requirements. The platform is integrated over three (3) 5G Experimentation Facilities in Spain, Greece, and Italy, while including links towards actual industrial sectors, for the showcasing of NetApps in a real 5G environment. The consortium includes all the required stakeholders (MNOs, Industries, System integrators and SMEs) from all the benefited business sectors evaluated within the project, while significant part of the work is conducted and exploited by innovative SMEs. It is noted that the 5G-INDUCE NetApp deployment and management framework is made available to third party NetApp developers, seeking to promote and evaluate their solutions through the 5G-INDUCE experimentation facilities.

Main Objectives:


The success of 5G technologies depends closely on their ability to attract vertical stakeholders, seeking the move of their services from cloud to the edge, to meet unique KPIs. The 5G-INDUCE project is based on the belief that such attractiveness requires vertical stakeholders and NetApp developers to be able to smoothly deploy and manage applications in distributed 5G network environments, in a secure fashion and with strict KPI requirements. The successful implementation of this vision constitutes the main objective of 5G-INDUCE. The project focus is directed towards the Industry 4.0 service deployment environment, as a highly exploitable domain for the proposed NetApp porting and management 5G framework.

The core activities of the project towards the implementation and exploitation of the main objective are:

The development and integration of a full-stack NetApp Management Platform including state-of-the-art control and data plane solutions based on intelligent OSS layer, scalable microservices-based cloud orchestration platform, and advance user interfaces for the porting of NetApps and the monitoring of their attributes.

The development and deployment of advanced Industry 4.0 NetApps, showcasing the support of a variety of innovative Industry 4.0 market verticals through the demonstration of advanced use cases that meet demanding Industry 4.0 and 5G KPIs (e.g., ultra-low latency, fast service deployment, high service reliability, while accommodating industrial-grade scalability demands).

The deployment of industry driven 5G Experimentation Infrastructures based on heterogeneous real-world industrial fields, (covering key large-scale sectors, such as automotive, energy, and home appliances), combined with public 5G network infrastructures.

The identification of the enabling Businesses and exploitation potentials towards all the impacted market stakeholders (i.e. (i) industrial players, (ii) network operators, and (iii) a large pool of NetApp developing SMEs/start-ups), through a beneficial business model for all, while maintaining discrete and distinct roles for each of these stakeholders.

UWS Role:


The main role of UWS will be to lead to successful delivery of WP4 NetApp use cases development and onboarding. UWS will lead as well T4.2 Development of use case specific NetApps. Along with ININ, they are responsible for NetApp UC 5: Inspection and surveillance services for critical infrastructures.

Use cases:


•UC 1: Autonomous indoor fleet management: The goal is to manage a small fleet of automated guided vehicles (AGV) with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) navigation, both outdoors and indoors, through 5G connectivity and edge computing capabilities.

•UC 2: Smart operation based on human gesture recognition: The purpose of this use case is to control industrial operations of AGVs through human gesticulations without using any type of special equipment, such as for instance haptic gloves or augmented reality (AR) glasses.

•UC 3: VR immersion and AGV control: This use case explores VR applications under 5G network capabilities with the goal to provide an immersive live 360 view from the AGV to a remote viewer.

•UC 4: ML-Supported Edge Analytics for Predictive Maintenance: The goal is to demonstrate ML-powered predictive maintenance using edge analytics in industrial settings, using federated learning to allow the propagation of system-wide models to distinct production lines to improve accuracy at near real-time, taking also into consideration the overall production targets and schedule of the whole industry.

•UC 5: Inspection and surveillance services for critical infrastructures: This use case performs automatic UAV-based tank and pipeline inspection and area surveillance monitoring, based on advance AI-assisted object status and human identification algorithms, linked to efficient warning mechanisms.

•UC 6: AR-based remote maintenance, repairing and upgrade: The use case will demonstrate the delivery of new and advanced safety and security features for Remote Assistance in maintenance applications, showcasing the capability of 5G environments to provide added security in remote maintenance use cases to prevent personal injury or confidentiality breaches.

•UC 7: Smart logistics over supply chain linked with factory operations: The purpose of this use case is to optimise the Supply Chain Processes utilising the minimum number of vehicles-travels in order to satisfy all resource requirements, while also implementing critical levels continuous monitoring, allowing immediate actions when critical levels are exceeded, and external interaction is required.

•UC 8: Drone based network performance and coverage monitoring: The goal is to provide industrial grade network performance and coverage monitoring of the critical communications infrastructure in 5G smart factory environments using continuous and on-demand operational mode with drone-assisted metrics collection, enabling visual 5G radio mapping, network and service metrics and industrial SLA KPIs.
